From 12th-15th April, 1915, the 1st Rifle Brigade battalion of 11 Brigade, 4th Division were in the front line at St Yves near Ploegsteert in Belgium where, according to the battalion diary it was wet but quiet. So there is no information as to the circumstances of the death of Charles Smart who was killed on 14th April. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
